Michigan Football: 5 Wolverines that need to step up this spring
Mustapha Muhammad
One position that has a lot of depth but also plenty of young, raw talent is tight end, where Gentry decided to declare for the NFL draft with one year of eligibility left.
His absence will mean that Michigan football needs to find another move tight end. Sean McKeon can split out some but he is better as an in-line tight end, a position he played very well last season. He was strong as a blocker and also caught 14 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown.
McKeon isn’t really a guy that is going to deliver a ton of big plays. Nick Eubanks is one player that could and he caught eight passes for 157 yards last season, but a name to watch this spring is Mustapha Muhammad, a player Gentry mentioned by name in an interview with Wolverines Wire during Peach Bowl practices. Here’s what he said:
“He has fresh legs, obviously, but he’s doing a pretty good job. It’s surprising. He knows what he’s doing out there. He didn’t practice all season.”
Muhammad was one of the Wolvineres top recruits in the 2018 class, but he struggled with injuries throughout his redshirt season and really didn’t get to practice until before the bowl game.
He was the sixth-ranked tight end in his class and with Gentry gone, he could put himself into the mix with McKeon, Eubanks, Luke Schoonmaker and Erick All, a freshman that will be there in spring practice.
