Spring practice is always important but on a team as deep as Michigan football, here are five guys that really need to step up if they want to play next season.

While it’s easy to be excited because March Madness starts in little over a week, there is something else to be pumped up about and that’s Michigan football starting spring practices.

The Wolverines will get spring football underway this Sunday and then they will play their spring game April 14. That will give players about a month to show what they can do and certainly, there are some guys that need to turn heads this spring more than others.

Obviously, Michigan football is going to be without some key players from last season as Devin Bush, Rashan Gary, Chase Winovich, Karan Higdon, David Long and Zach Gentry are all headed to the NFL, either as seniors or after declaring for the draft.

That leaves some spots on the depth chart that need to be filled, but at some positions, there is already a sort of hierarchy in place. Inside linebacker is a good example of that.

Josh Ross seems destined to fill Bush’s spot and we know Devin Gill is going to see snaps at linebacker, but that doesn’t mean someone like Cameron McGrone couldn’t have a strong spring, as well as a strong fall camp and take that starting job.

As Jim Harbaugh always says, Michigan football is a meritocracy so anyone can get playing time, they just need to earn it and here is a look at five guys who could go a long way towards doing that if they can step up this spring.
