Michigan Football: Jim Harbaugh chases more QBs on recruiting trail
Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh has been putting in a lot of work recruiting quarterbacks from 2020 and 2021. Here’s the latest.
One of the best things that Jim Harbaugh has done since taking over as head coach of Michigan football has been the way he has stabilized the quarterback position.
Admittedly, it took Harbaugh a few years to get the position settled, but now, it appears to be in good hands well into the future and the good news for Michigan football fans is that Harbaugh won’t stop trying to add talented quarterbacks anytime soon.
After signing four-star signal caller Cade McNamara to the 2019 class, Harbaugh has turned his attention to 2020 and beyond and this past week, he made some key visits and even extended an offer to Deion Sanders son, Sheduer Sanders, who looks to be one of the top QBs in 2021.
Michigan football is just the latest team to offer Sanders, who prognosticators say will likely end up with Florida State or Georgia. However, Sanders isn’t the only 2021 quarterback that got some attention this week, as Harbaugh paid a visit to Preston Stone, another highly-touted prospect.
While Sanders is not yet ranked, Stone is and he is already the No. 6 quarterback prospect and among dual-threat quarterbacks, he is No. 1., as well as being the No. 90 player overall in the 2021 class according to 247 sports.
Another target for the 2021 class for Michigan football is quarterback Peter Costelli, who is a four-star prospect from Santa Monica, CA. Costelli was recently quoted by the Michigan Insider ($) as saying, “How can I not be interested in U-M.”
That’s a good question because quarterbacks seem to gravitate towards Harbaugh and with Josh Gattis running the offensive, that should open up the Wolverines to even more dual-threat options like Sanders and Stone.
Another example of that is 2020 in-state quarterback Anthony Romphf, who got what he called a “dream” offer from the Wolverines, according again to the Michigan Insider. Romphf is the 27th-ranked dual-threat quarterback from 2020 and if he joined the program, he would be the second 2020 passer along with JD Johnson, a three-star from Arizona.
While some schools take just one quarterback per year, which is basically what the Wolverines did last year with Joe Milton, it looks like Michigan football is on the hunt for two in 2020 and that opens the door for another commitment beyond Johnson’s.
National signing day might be next week but as far as Harbaugh is concerned, the work has already begun on 2020 and beyond, with his aim being to solidify the quarterback position well into the future.
