Michigan Basketball: Can Jon Teske continue his hot streak at Indiana?
Jon Teske has been on fire lately for Michigan basketball lately and with Indiana on tap for tonight, can the Wolverines big man keep it going?
When the season started, few would have predicted that at some point during the Big Ten conference schedule, Jon Teske was going to be the best offensive player for Michigan basketball.
But over the last four games, that is exactly what has happened. The other offensive weapons such as Ignas Brazdeikis, Charles Matthews and Jordan Poole, the Wolverines three leading scorers have all been in a bit of a slump.
Over the last two games, things have been particularly bad, as the trio has combined for 43 points in those two games. Prior to that, they were averaging 45 points a night.
But don’t worry Michigan basketball fans, Teske is here and over the last couple of weeks, he is looking like much more than a defensive big man who can knock down the occasional shot. In fact, over the last four games, he is probably shooting the ball as well as anyone in the Big Ten.
Teske’s overall numbers are very good, as he averages 9.9 points and 6.6 rebounds per game to go along with 2.3 blocks. What’s really impressive though is the way he’s shooting it. For the season, he is making 53 percent from the field (59 percent on 2’s, 34 percent on 3’s).
During the last four games though, Teske has simply been off the charts. He has scored at least 13 points in each game and is averaging an even 15 points during the four-game stretch. Yet, what’s even more impressive are his shooting percentages.
The 7-foot-2, Michigan basketball center is making 64 percent of his shot attempts during the run and is 7-of-13 from 3-point range, which is 53 percent. Prior to the game against Illinois, Teske has made just four 3-pointers all year.
Then, against Northwestern, Teske buried three and scored 17 points against the Wildcats in the first half. He also recorded double-doubles against Illinois and Northwestern.
Of course, it remains to be seen how long the Wolverines can survive with Teske being their most reliable offensive player. However, his ability to shoot and score isn’t a fluke. He’s worked hard at his offensive game and that work is paying dividends.
Teske is spotting up quickly and shooting with confidence. He has also done a great job cutting around the basket and finishing, not to mention what he does on defense and on the boards.
It remains to be seen whether he can keep it up, but for now, it seems that opponents want to keep trying Teske and making him beat them. So far, he’s been able to do it and if he can keep his hot shooting streak tonight against Indiana, Michigan will have a good chance to win once again.
