The calendar has turned to 2019 and that means a fresh start for Michigan football. Here are five New Year’s resolutions for the Wolverines.

The new year is always a time to think about change and when it comes to the Michigan football program, there are plenty of things that need to be different.

When it was all said and done, 2018 wasn’t an awful year for Michigan football. It ended badly but the Wolverines won 10 games, beat Michigan State and played in a major bowl game. In a lot of other places, that would be viewed as a success.

Of course, Michigan isn’t one of those places. With Jim Harbaugh as the head coach and the resources at his disposal, the expectations are high — as they should be. So far though, Harbaugh has failed to meet them.

In four years, he has won 38 games and has a 26-9 record in the Big Ten. Compared to previous regimes, that is a huge step forward and there is no doubt progress has been made. At the same time, Michigan needs to take the next step and it’s having a hard time doing that.

It looked like it was possible in both 2016 and 2018, however, each time, Ohio State foiled those plans and it all came crashing down. Over the past couple of the seasons, the same issues keep popping up and until they are addressed, Michigan football won’t beat elite teams.

So here are five New Year’s resolutions for the Wolverines to reach that next level.
