A more aggressive approach on offense

This should be a fairly easy item for everyone to agree on. When it comes to Michigan football, the first thing the Wolverines need to take the next step is running more of a new-age offense.

Don’t get me wrong, I love power football. I love when Michigan ran the ball right at Wisconsin and Michigan State and Penn State. The power plays, the traps — it was all great. UM dominated up front and won all three of those games by being the better, more physical team.

Unfortunately, Michigan can’t win every game that way and Harbaugh needs to realize it. Notre Dame and Ohio State had athletes as good or better than Michigan and they were able to beat the Wolverines because of it.

Against Ohio State, the Wolverines were way too predictable. They ran too much on first and second down and threw, it seemed, mostly on second and third-and-long. Ohio State had one of the worst pass defenses in the Big Ten and Michigan decided to try and play old-school football against a team that knew exactly what was coming and had the horses to stop it.

With Shea Patterson back, Michigan is loaded with NFL talent. Donovan Peoples-Jones, Nico Collins, Tarik Black and Zach Gentry all look like draft picks. Four of the five starters on the offensive line will be back and running back should be just fine.

Now, the Wolverines need to stop wasting their talent by throwing the football more and being more aggressive, especially against teams like Ohio State. A great first start would be opening the playbook vs Florida in the Peach Bowl. I guess that’s when we will see if anything has changed.
