Michigan Football: Ranking the Wolverines top 10 bowl victories
8. Michigan beats Oregon State in 1965 Rose Bowl
When you think of great Michigan football coaches you generally don’t think of Bump Elliott. That’s because, in 10 years as the Michigan head coach, Elliott wasn’t exactly a success with a 51-42-2 record.
Eventually, he would be replaced by Schembechler, who ushered in one of the greatest eras Michigan football has ever known. However, Elliott shouldn’t be completely forgotten as he coached the 1964 team to one of the better seasons in school history.
The Wolverines beat four top-10 teams in Navy, Michigan State and Ohio State on their way to the Big Ten championship and a berth in the Rose Bowl. In Pasadena, Michigan faced ninth-ranked Oregon State, but crushed the Beavers 34-9, finishing the season 9-1 and ranked fourth in the final AP poll.
The win over Oregon State would be the Wolverines last Rose Bowl win until 1981.
