With a report out that Urban Meyer may step down from Ohio State after the 2019 season, it would give Michigan football just one more shot to beat him.

Michigan football fans hate Urban Meyer, the head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes and they have every right to. The fact that he dons the Scarlet and Gray is reason enough to despise him, however, the 7-0 record he holds over the Wolverines is another.

There was hope that this would finally be the year Jim Harbaugh and Michigan football beat Urban Meyer. Of course, we all know how that went and just like Jim Tressel, Meyer has turned this rivalry completely in the favor of the Buckeyes.

Michigan won with Brady Hoke in 2011 and the tide seemed to be turning. Then, the Buckeyes got Meyer and the rest was history. Even the hire of Harbaugh hasn’t mattered and Meyer is 4-0 against the supposed Michigan savior.

Of course, after the scandal that erupted around Meyer earlier this year and with the health issues that have plagued him, there has been plenty of speculation about his future at Ohio State. Well, now, football scoop has come out with a report that states Meyer will step down after 2019, leaving the job vacant for Ryan Day, who was the interim coach during Meyer’s suspension.

In a way, it’s not surprising that Meyer might leave, but it does seem strange that he would leave after 2019, instead of after this season. I guess my question is, why would he want to wait?

Meyer just beat Michigan again and if he beats Northwestern, he will win a  third Big Ten Championship and possibly get into the playoffs for the third time. Seems like a good time to ride off into the sunset.

Don’t get me wrong, I want Meyer to stay. The idea of him retiring with an unblemished record against the Wolverines makes me sick. Harbaugh needs to beat him and more than that, Michigan football needs to beat him, at least once.

So he can go out in 2019 if he wants, however, you have to feel like Michigan football will have a great chance at winning the game next season, especially if Shea Patterson returns. Michigan is losing some key guys on defense, yet most of the offense will be back and there are plenty of talented recruits waiting to fill the voids left by Chase Winovich, Rashan Gary and Devin Bush.

Those guys will be hard to replace, but Michigan should still field a strong defense and if Harbaugh opens up the offense a little with Nico Collins, Donovan Peoples-Jones and Tarik Black all returning, the Wolverines could finally conquer their rivals to the South.

Hopefully, that happens and Michigan football sends Meyer off with a butt kicking. If not though, seeing him ride off at 8-0 or even now at 7-0, would be as painful as it must be satisfying for Ohio State fans.
