Michigan Basketball: 5 things we learned from win over North Carolina
Is Michigan the best team in the Big Ten?
Michigan basketball has been extremely impressive this season on its way to a 7-0 start. The Wolverines are the seventh-ranked team in the AP poll right now, but if they can follow up their win over North Carolina with another, at home, against Purdue Saturday, this team should crack the top five.
With teams like Duke and Gonzaga, not to mention others, it’s hard to say Michigan is the best team in the country or even one of the best teams. Yet, at this point, you are starting to feel like this is the best team in the Big Ten.
Michigan State has dropped a couple of games recently and while other teams like Nebraska, Wisconsin, Purdue and Ohio State are playing well, no one in the league is on the Wolverines level right now.
Certainly, that can change and it could change as quickly as Saturday’s showdown with Purdue. The win over North Carolina was huge. It was one of the best non-conference wins of Beilein’s career and the fact that Michigan has wins over blue-bloods like North Carolina and Villanova will help the resume tremendously. Yet, it won’t matter when it comes to the Big Ten title.
To me, that is the goal this season, first and foremost. Michigan hasn’t won or shared the regular season title since 2014, so it would nice to end that drought. Right now, this team looks like the favorite and it can back that up by beating Purdue at Crisler Arena Saturday.
