Michigan Basketball: 5 predictions for Wolverines against North Carolina
Michigan has to win the turnover battle
Unlike seasons past, Michigan basketball wants to play at a much slower pace. Part of that is because of its great defense and it’s also because the team doesn’t have the shooters it is used to having.
In terms of 3-pointers made, attempted and 3-point shooting percentage, Michigan ranks 208th, 191st and 217th. In other words, this is a different Michigan team. The Wolverines still have guys who can shoot in Jordan Poole, Isaiah Livers and Eli Brooks, but the dropoff has been noticeable.
Yet, one thing that hasn’t changed is Michigan’s ability to take care of the ball. The Wolverines are averaging just nine turnovers a game and are 19th in the country in terms of fewest turnovers. On the other side, North Carolina turns it over 13.2 times per game.
Generally, it doesn’t hurt the Tar Heels, because they force their opponents into so many turnovers, 15.5 per game. If the Wolverines turn the ball over 15 times, they will have no chance to win this game. However, if Michigan can keep its giveaways in single digits while forcing Carolina in 13 or more, UM should come out on top.
