Michigan Wolverines Football: 30 greatest players of all-time
By Brad Weiss
During his time at Wilson Senior High School in West Lawn, Pennsylvania, Chad Henne became one of the best high school quarterback prospects in the country. He decided on Michigan to be his school. It did not take him long to make an impact. He became only the second true freshman to start a season opener for the Maize and Blue.
Henne joined legendary Michigan quarterback Rick Leach as the only true freshman to start an opener. And he did well, as the team won the game 43-10 against the Miami (OH) RedHawks. That season, Henne led the Wolverines to a 9-2 record and a spot in the Rose Bowl, where they would eventually lose to Texas.
A four-year starter for Michigan, Henne left school with a ton of passing records, including completions (828), touchdowns (87) and passing yards (9.715). However, it was not all sunshine and roses for Henne. He never beat Ohio State during his college career, and was often criticized when the team lost. This includes that horrible loss to the Appalachian State Mountaineers.
Henne ended his Michigan career on a high note, however, as he led the team to a victory over Tim Tebow and the Florida Gators in the Capital One Bowl. The signal caller was a second-round selection of the Miami Dolphins after his college days were over. He is still in the NFL all these years later, serving as the backup to Patrick Mahomes on the Kansas City Chiefs.
