Michigan Football: 5 things we learned from domination of Michigan State
Michigan pass defense is ridiculously good
In the last two weeks, the Michigan pass defense hasn’t just been dominant, it has been downright nasty. The Wolverines didn’t just beat Alex Hornibrook and Brian Lewerke, they made both quarterbacks look foolish.
Lewerke, who was completing 60 percent of his throws coming into the game, completed 5-of-25 passes for 66 yards. Michigan State was 0-12 on third down conversion attempts. That’s just insane. Hornibrook wasn’t much better.
Michigan picked him off twice and limited him to just 25 yards before he threw for 75 and a touchdown on the final drive of the game, something also referred to as garbage time. Those kind of numbers aren’t just good, great or even elite — they are extraordinary.
The pass rush with Chase Winovich, Uche, Paye and hopefully Gary, is one of the best in the country and the secondary is loaded with talent too, especially David Long and Lavert Hill.
At the end of the day, you can score points on this Michigan defense. Northwestern and Notre Dame have both shown that. Yet, as the season goes on, it appears to be getting harder and harder against what is clearly the best pass defense in the FBS.
