Michigan football beat MSU 45-20 Saturday at the Big House. However, despite the lopsided score, not everything went well for the Wolverines.

Michigan football had some good moments in the win over SMU Saturday at the Big House, but there were also some moments that weren’t so terrific.

For a team that was a 35-point favorite, Michigan football certainly didn’t play like one. In the first half, the defense played well, until it allowed a 55-yard touchdown pass because of a blown coverage. Then, in the second half, the offense got things going after struggling for much of the opening half.

Really, the offense didn’t even play that bad to start. The first drive ended in a punt, then Shea Patterson threw an interception on a long drive down the field.  The Wolverines only ended up with eight possessions and scored on six. A seventh went as far as the SMU 12.

The score was still 0-0 at that point and it was until Ben Mason broke the tie with a one-yard touchdown run. That came on fourth down, so early on, nothing came easy. However, the game broke open soon after.

Donovan Peoples-Jones caught a 41-yard touchdown pass from Shea Patterson and Josh Metellus intercepted a pass and returned it 70 some yards for a touchdown on the last play of the first half to make it 21-7.

Two more touchdown passes from Patterson to Peoples-Jones put the game out of reach. But taking a deeper look, with Big Ten play starting next week, what did we learn about the Wolverines? Here’s our look at what Saturday taught us.
