Michigan basketball coach John Beilein is now considered a finalist for the Detroit Pistons job. Here are three reasons why you should take this seriously.

It’s been less than a week since the bombshell was dropped to Michigan basketball fans. You know, the one about head coach John Beilein interviewing with the Detroit Pistons for the same position.

In some ways, Michigan basketball fans really shouldn’t be surprised. After all, Beilein has taken a school that is above-average at best in recruiting and taken it to a pair of national championship games. He has also led the Wolverines to numerous conference titles and four total trips to the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament.

Bottom line, he is one of the best in the business. Beilein knows how to develop players and he knows how to coach the game. No, the interest in him shouldn’t come as a surprise. What is a bit stunning is that he is interested too.

There have been some fascinating reporting done about how few close to him knew about this. That right there could be telling. Now though, things are getting really serious. It was reported Monday that the Pistons have narrowed the search to Beilein and former Raptors head man Dwayne Casey.

It remains to be seen who gets the job. If you believe Rod Beard of the Detroit News, Casey is the favorite. However, things can change quickly in the coaching landscape and here are three reasons Beilein could bolt for the NBA.
