If Michigan keeps missing free throws, it will cost them eventually

It’s great that Michigan basketball beat Minnesota. It was a game the Wolverines absolutely needed to win. But it also raised some major concerns, like the poor free throw shooting, which has been an issue all season long.

The Wolverines missed 16 free throws against the Gophers. 16! 12-of-28. Head coach John Beilein had to be losing his mind watching all those points clank off the rim. But coming into the game, Michigan ranked 323rd in the nation in free throw percentage, so it’s not surprising.

Two starters, Simpson and Matthews are both shooting in the 50’s Wagner is also down to 68 percent. Missed three throws hurt in both Purdue losses and against LSU, another game UM should have won.

Simpson and Rahkman, who were 3-of-9, along with Matthews, who was 5-of-12, made up up for their misses by getting to the basket, especially late in the game. But if the Wolverines want to win late in the year, the have got to get better at the charity stripe.
