Beating Notre Dame would be a big win

With a record of 1-5 against his chief rivals and a 1-7 mark against teams ranked in the top 10, it’s safe to say that Harbuagh has struggled in big games at Michigan.

To be fair, his teams have had chances to win just about every game he has lost, outside of Ohio State in 2015 and Penn State this past season, even though both of those games were at least close at the half.

Michigan doesn’t get blown out under Harbaugh and have proven capable of playing with anyone. But if the Wolverines want to take the next step, they need to start winning big games.

A win in the Outback Bowl over South Carolina will be nice. It will give the Wolverines a ninth win and a good feeling heading into 2018, but it’s not a big win, not a defining win Harbaugh needs anyways.

Beating Notre Dame next September won’t cut it either. At some point, he needs to beat the Spartans and Buckeyes. However, a win over the Irish would get Michigan football national attention right away. And regardless of what some might say, it would most definitely count as a big win.
