Michigan football may have looked bad in its loss to Michigan State last Saturday, but here are three reasons why you shouldn’t panic. Just yet.

In all my years as a Michigan football fan, few losses seemingly hit me harder than the one suffered last Saturday night. Obviously, the Wolverines have been dealt many heartbreaking defeats. But losing again to Michigan State was just devastating.

Somehow, with one 14-10 win at the Big House, the Spartans seemed to erase everything Michigan football has achieved. That one win, gave them two of three over Jim Harbaugh. It also gave them control of the rivalry, again.

Maybe that’s why it hurts so bad. After all, Michigan football is supposed to have bigger fish to fry. Penn State, Ohio State, Alabama and Clemson. Those are the teams the Wolverines are chasing or at least we thought.

Instead, the Wolverines couldn’t beat a team that went 3-9 a season ago. And now, they will have to listen about how Sparty owns the state, at least till next football season.

But here the Wolverines sit, 4-1, with everything still in front of them. The loss to Michigan State was bad yes, but let’s not forget, the Spartans are suddenly 4-1. Yes, Harbaugh is 1-4 in rivalry games, but as he pointed out, he’s 23-3 against everyone else. He also has plenty of wins over top-25 opponents (BYU, Northwestern, Florida, Wisconsin, Florida).

If that record continues, Michigan football will be just fine. Certainly, there is work to be done, before a Big Ten Championship can be claimed, but this program is on the rise. Harbaugh is here to stay and here are a few reasons why we can all avoid the panic button, at least for a few more days.
