Michigan Football: What to do with Wilton Speight?
By Connor Boyer
Play to his strengths.
Wilton Speight has enough good qualities to warrant Jim Harbaugh’s decision to make him the starting QB. The senior is very good at reading defenses and he has the ability of calling out plays at the line of scrimmage. This is one of the things that goes unnoticed by most fans, but any coach will tell you how important this is. He also has very good pocket awareness and is able to move around the pocket very well. This gives his Wide-receivers time to get open. Another thing Speight is very good at is making good decisions with the football.
I’m sure a lot of this is play calling, Michigan football usually runs safe conservative pass plays, deciding not to take deep shots down the field more then a few times a game. But credit Speight with making the right decision when throwing the ball.
Even on those interceptions in week 1, Wilton didn’t make the wrong decision throwing the ball, it was the fact that he sailed both passes that caused them to be intercepted. He is able to make safe good decision with the football and avoid putting the ball in a dangerous spot that the defense can take advantage of.
