Referees

I believe the crew was from the Big12. I can’t say they were biased. It’s not like they were all from Ohio, I mean Florida, and one was a well known Buckeye, I mean Florida, fan or anything. But the first call they definitely blew. It was with 5:31 left in the first quarter.

They called Khalid Hill for blocking downfield when he was not an eligible receiver. This was crazy because he never left the backfield. The TV crew opined that he meant Crawford #1, who started on the line, then took a step into the backfield and maybe they thought he did not step back far enough. I saw video of Jim Harbaugh suggesting that maybe they thought Wheatley #17 was downfield even though covered by the WR, but Wheatley stayed in to block for Speight. IMO Crawford and Michigan football had a TD stolen.

My other beef with the ref’s came with 13:53 left in the second quarter. Grant Perry just got a big third down catch for a first down and spun the ball on the ground. They called him for an unsportsmanlike 15 yard penalty which gave us first and ten, but 15 yards back.

Moments later Speight threw his first pick six. The announcers took the officials side, which they often do whenever these scary athletes challenge the decency of society by spinning balls and so forth – hey if they were to get away with such things, what would be next? And they also took that moment to bring up Grant’s recent legal issues. Hopefully they won’t feel the need to mention that every game.
