Forget the hype of playing a bunch of positions. Jabrill Peppers is just a good football player, and he’s going to reward the Cleveland Browns.

Few players have garnered as much attention in college football for the last couple years as Jabrill Peppers.

They like that he can play almost anywhere on the field; they like that he can return punts and kicks; they like that he can be used on offense. Those are the things everyone has been talking about—well, that and a dilute sample—but getting mentioned as an afterthought is that Peppers is a good football player.

The concerns are well documented. As a projected safety in the NFL, Peppers’ coverage skills do need some work. Should the Browns try to bring him up occasionally into a similar role that he played last season for Michigan football as a do-it-all linebacker, size becomes an issue.

But the bottom line here is that Peppers is a playmaking defender. He’s a bullet into the backfield and physical against the run. He’s also a sure tackler and plays with a high motor.

His style of play is very attractive, something a can defense can rally around.

One of the big questions that will be answered in the coming years is just how much of Peppers’ football ability has been contingent on his ability to move all over the field. In other words, if Peppers isn’t allowed to roam like he did at Michigan, is he still a great football player?

The Browns surely won’t back themselves into that corner. To draft Peppers and then keep him locked in a box would be a complete miscalculation of what you’re getting. Cleveland has been the saddest NFL franchise for some time, but let’s give the organization a little credit.

As a free safety, Peppers is going to be able to remain a playmaker. It obviously won’t be like when Michigan was moving him to practically very position by nose guard, but he’s going to get his chances.

The Browns will obviously explore this moving forward, but it would be a little surprising if we found out there was never any real consideration given to getting Peppers involved offensively. Thinking back to before Michigan got a little too Peppers-happy on offense and started giving him the ball too often and too predictably, Peppers was a serious weapon with the ball in his hands.

There are many possibilities for Peppers with the Browns. It’s easy to get caught up into the hype that exists on the side of him being a good football player. But rest assured that Peppers is going to be a difference-maker on this defense.
