Michigan basketball underclassmen Moe Wagner and D.J. Wilson should both enter the NBA draft, but they should do so without hiring an agent.

The Michigan basketball team had an incredible run in 2016-17. But with two of its best players potentially leaving early for the NBA, the run of success could be short lived.

Moe Wagner and D.J. Wilson both had breakout years. Each player averaged in double figures after scoring in single digits a season ago. And both had big months in March.

Wagner’s 26-point game against Louisville put him on the map. Wilson got himself noticed by his ability to score inside, shoot the 3-pointer, defend and by showing outstanding athleticism.

Wagner is 6-11, Wilson is 6-10 and both can shoot. They can rebound, they can score and they look like new-age NBA players.

Wilson is a 3/4 combo that NBA scouts drool over. Wagner, meanwhile, is a stretch four with a post game. Not unlike Dirk Nowitzki, just in terms of raw skills. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Each players has a lot to offer and I am betting, each would go in the first round of the 2017 NBA draft. They are too talent and have too much potential not too.

In the NFL draft, a lack of production scares teams off. In the NBA draft, it’s the exact opposite. They are looking for potential and these two Michigan basketball players have it in spades.

Certainly, Wolverines fans should want them to stay. If both were back, along with the addition of Charles Matthews and potentially another graduate transfer, Michigan basketball could be really good next season.

Another Sweet 16 run wouldn’t be out of the question. Yet, as much as it pains me to say it, Wagner and Wilson should both enter the draft, at least without an agent.

According to Jake Fischer, both are leaning towards it. However, there is a big difference between them hiring an agent and not.

If a player hires an agent, he can’t come back to school. Yet, if he puts his name in the draft without an agent, the players gets until June 12 to withdraw.

And with new rules in place that allows these players to go to the combine and meet with teams, it’s almost silly for any player not to enter the draft.

Wagner and Wilson could both benefit from another year in school. And who knows, in the 2018 draft, maybe they will be lottery picks.

If they aren’t that high yet, both should consider coming back because not going in the first round, means no guaranteed contract and that’s a risk both could take by leaving school this year.

Each should find out their value and if they are close to the lottery, then go. If not, they should think long and hard about one more season to raise their stock.
