Michigan Football: The Beer Drinking Man’s Guide to the Penn State Game

Which beer should you have in your hand for Michigan football’s trip to Penn State on Saturday?

After a couple weeks of predicting its arrival, winter is here in earnest. Ann Arbor has a winter storm watch and it ain’t much better in Happy Valley with a high of 45 and low of 39. Hell, even down here in New Orleans we’re reaching the 40s at night.

Saturday’s game against Penn State is going to be a slow, plodding affair. It’s deeply unclear if the Jake Rudock explosion will be able to harness enough kinetic energy from the last two weeks to keep up the momentum of the Rutgers and Indiana games because the Nittany Lion defense is really good and the Wolverine passing attack has only been really good against two terrible defenses.

This should be a close game throughout (Michigan is a 3.5-point favorite on the road), fought by two teams that have decent offenses and awesome defenses.

Seeing as how the game has a noon kick and, depending on the outcome of the game, the 3:30 contest between OSU and MSU could mean a lot, we should all probably want to keep our wits about us. That said, we’re nearing the end of the season, so let’s go all out with our beverage choice.

Drink Founder’s Breakfast Stout on Saturday. It clocks in at a robust 8.3% ABV, is delicious, and will help with all of the anxiety that a close game will inevitably produce. If you have means to do so, I’d say killing a few of these during the game and then napping up for the second half of the Sparty-Ohio State game is the way to go. Even if not, this is a great beer that’ll see you to the finish line of an important noon game against a good opponent.

Founders is probably the second best brewery in the state of Michigan, and the Breakfast Stout is probably its best beer.

It pours as close to a true black as beer can get but isn’t too heavy, even at 8.3 ABV. It has a nice deep tan head and finishes clean out of the glass and off your tongue.

As with most breakfast stouts, this one is heavy on the coffee and chocolate notes. Unlike most breakfast stouts, however, it doesn’t rely too much on its non-alcoholic ingredients to mask the alcohol. There’s a perfect amount of coffee (just enough to keep the chocolate notes in their rightful place) and thus it doesn’t make you think you’re drinking coffee syrup mixed with Hershey’s and alcohol (Founder’s gets their coffee from a local roaster).

Everything tastes genuine—because it is.

The stout finishes more like a cream ale than a heavy dark beer, so it’s easy to drink (hence the “Breakfast” part of its name, I guess) and easy to keep drinking. We’re nearing the end of the football season and the team is playing a game with actual stakes, so why not get a little rowdy early in the day with one of Michigan’s best beers?

It’s cold outside, it’s hopeful inside, and the boys in maize and blue can make a run for greatness over the next couple weeks, so drink up!
