The addition of Duncan Robinson is one of the most intriguing factors going into Michigan’s season. After a stellar freshman season at Division III Williams College and becoming freshman of the year in all of D-III, John Beilein offered him a chance to play for Michigan.

The jump from Division III to the Big Ten is a huge one, and it will be interesting to see how Robinson does even with a year already in Beilein’s system. He learned the ropes last year as he sat out and impressed as a scorer in practice. He could see minutes at either the two or the three as an off-the-bench scorer.

Robinson’s primary job will be to score threes. That’s about it. With his size he could develop into a solid rebounder, but once again it all depends on how his game translates to Division I basketball. Beilein might have to come up with defense-heavy lineups that can hide Robinson’s weaknesses if he can’t fully translate his game.

If he can get things rolling, Robinson will be a lethal weapon on offense. He’ll have to maintain a hot shot selection to keep a good number of minutes as he competes for what’s left between the two and three spots.

Michigan has two other players at the wing, but neither will likely see much playing time. Sean Lonergan is a junior walk-on forward who played when Michigan absolutely needed a body due to injuries/foul trouble. It’s unlikely he’ll get more than garbage time minutes this season. Brent Hibbitts is a preferred walk-on freshman who could be a potential stretch four. With the logjam for playing time at that position, it’s unlikely he’ll contribute this season. A redshirt seems like the obvious choice for him.
