It’s amazing what can happen when the ground game is running smoothly. De’Veon Smith had a career day against the Beavers, rushing for 126 of Michigan’s 225 ground yards and three touchdowns. It was an efficient 126 yards as well, with Smith averaging 5.5 yards per carry. It’s a good sign for the running back after struggling in Week 1 and not rushing for more than seven yards.
Smith was hitting holes with much more consistency this time around as well. Last week he looked lost and missed some of the hole in front of him. This week he hit holes and hit them hard. He also had some nice plays as a receiver. Smith secured himself as the feature back in this game.
After the game had been put away, Derrick Green took over the reins, putting up 35 yards and the final touchdown of the day. Ty Isaac also saw some action with 35 yards of his own. Drake Johnson was back from his injury for this game, but he only carried the ball once.
At fullback, Joe Kerridge didn’t see the ball much, but he was a very effective blocker. Backup fullback Sione Houma looked promising late in the game with two nice carries.
After watching Michigan’s abysmal running game for the past few years, it was great to see them do well against a Power 5 team.
