Michigan Wolverine Football: Spring Football — Work To Be Done — LB

For years, Michigan’s linebackers have been faulted for poor pass coverage and not playing well in space. The cast is the same and those parts must simply be translated into better function.

It will be interesting to see if the new experimental roll of Royce Jenkins-Stone playing up on the line as a hand on the ground end or hybrid is a success.

Joe Bolden is an above average athlete who is one of Michigan’s better technicians. While bemoaned by a few, Joe Bolden is the type of high quality guy that any team would welcome. He has purpose, leadership, and should play at least a standard plus grade of linebacker. There should be little retooling needed for Bolden.

The other potential inside presence of the Wolverines is fifth-year senior, Desmond Morgan. Morgan is vulnerable on the edge but has decent hitting ability. He is a competitor, has toughness, and should adapt to the new urgency of the coaching staff. Desmond is a little small for an inside run stuffer, but he has seen this movie before and if healthy will be ready.

James Ross III had an up and down year in 2014. Jenkins-Stone was envisioned to be the speed guy and Ross the power guy when recruited. Ross is still on the small side, but it seems he is busting it in practice and has a very good chance to start come fall.

  • Ben Gedeon has size and speed as well as reasonable experience. He should provide flexibility by being capable of playing multiple spots. Gedeon, being one of the few athletes on the Michigan roster known as having freak style athleticism, may eventually crack the line-up by using a combination of hard work and superior talent. A similar athlete is Mike McCray. He also has size and above average athletic talent. Mike McCray plays hard and can hit.

With Chase Winovich moving to offense and Noah Furbush are uncertain parts, but time changes arrangement. Both have work to do and hopefully they both progress, as there is little in the linebacker crew after the players mentioned above. There always remains a chance of one or two safeties migrate into the linebacker group for D.J. Durkin.

    Next up, the defensive backs.
