Michigan Wolverine Football: Spring Football — Work To Be Done — DL

The defensive line has veteran athletes that in the past held up but never excelled when it counted at crunch time. That can change via experience, strength, willpower, or superior coaching.

Last few years Michigan could not get to the passer with four or five rushers and unfortunately could not get to the passer with blitz packages. The result was the opposition completing big plays against either a blitz or a drop back and protect arrangement.

The parts that Coach Greg Mattison and Coach D.J. Durkin will be looking for on the line can be equated to numbers. Who can and will play even and odd fronts?

Who will play the zero or one spots, the three, five, and outside spots? One good thing going for Coach Durkin is that the parts have enough similarity to interchange and provide flexibility.

  • The inside guys will almost certainly include Bryan Mone and Ondre Pipkins, Willie Henry, Chris Wormley and Ryan Glasgow have the size for at least a three technique spot and good speed for a defensive lineman. Matthew Godin seems to be the typical five-technique tackle that may be asked to adapt to new schemes for team flexibility.

Taco Charlton is big enough to play inside but is needed somewhere to engage the defense into a pass rush mode. Mario Ojemudia gets another chance to fit into the Michigan scheme. He remains undersized, but guys smaller than Mario can cause havoc.

It will be interesting to see the effect the new staff philosophy and the continued work with Coach Greg Mattison have on his progress.

    Next up, the Linebackers.
