Michigan Wolverine Football: Spring Football — Work To Be Done — QB’s

Work To Be Done, Parts To Be Made, Machine to Be Finished

Recently, many of us have mentioned that the current Michigan coaching staff has a pretty significant job ahead in the upcoming spring practice, summer workouts, and 2015 season. There are parts to be found, tooled, and inserted into a finely run machine. This will be undertaken in many ways, sometimes depending on the position in question.

The quarterback derby will be focused, intense, and, depending on the candidate, stressful or exhilarating. Experience is only a small variable, since only Shane Morris has started a college football game, and precious few at that. Wilton Speight has some nice intangibles and good touch. He is not the pondering dinosaur some think. Morris and Speight are pretty close in football speed and scrambling.

The newcomer, Alex Malzone, comes the short distance to Ann Arbor with a confidence bubble that cannot be underestimated. He always seems to compete and loves doing so.

If Jake Rudock leaves Iowa and ends up at Michigan, he gains the experience factor, and presents a short option of maturity and game experience Jim Harbaugh and the offensive staff would love to enjoy until the talented Malzone, Zach Gentry, and John O’Korn get up to speed. Eventually one of these newcomers will be thrown into the fire and will need to come out of the gauntlet in good shape. Having an experienced quarterback play against Utah, BYU, and Oregon State must be very attractive to the offensive staff and hopefully to the Graduate School as well.

The winner of the position will likely be named no earlier than one or two weeks before the opener at Utah. The winner must understand the offense, adapt to the offense, and prevent critical errors, not making himself the other team’s most valuable player. The decision makers are assumed to be the threesome of Coaches Harbaugh, Tim Drevno, and Jedd Fisch, with Harbaugh having two votes. The decision will be temporary and tentative since losses could spur an early replacement.

  • Whoever is quarterback can depend on a handful of at least average big conference receivers. Michigan’s passing game coaches will work heavy on cleaning up route running for sure, and probably demand a great increase in blocking ability and effort. It will be the winner’s job to see the defense, adjust the call, make the read and place the ball in an accurate and timely manner to the receivers.

Accuracy, understanding what the defense is trying to do, staying alive in the pocket, and executing to keep drives alive will be factors that help the staff reach a final conclusion.

Next up- more work to be done.
