On and under the surface, there simply appears to be much to admire about Coach Jackson’s rising career. First, any defensive coach in the NFL must have well above average knowledge of x’s and o’s, or their position group will get eaten alive. The defensive backs of the 49’ers were a VERY successful group under Coach Jackson.
Second, Coach Jackson played 12 years in the NFL. Again, this combines x’s and o’s, plus valuable experience. He learned from many defensive coaches; this expands technique and teaching/coaching style. In fact, Harbaugh and Jackson were once teammates.

Third, Coach Jackson does have college experience, so he knows about how kids function, recruiting, and the dealings of university life. He coached at four stops, including Tulane and Wisconsin. So, Jackson knows the Big Ten, is from Florida and played at LSU- not bad for potential recruiting success.
Coach Harbaugh stated that Jackson has a proven track record working with elite NFL defensive backs and is very familiar with the Big Ten landscape, and that players with the desire to play at the next level and the right work ethic will benefit from Jackson’s approach and ability.
Coach Harbaugh does appear to have all of his coaching pieces in place, perhaps excepting one cog. It is just a matter of the daily announcements.
