Greg Mattison has coached under all three Harbaugh’s with coaching for Jack Harbaugh at Western Michigan, Jon Harbaugh with the Baltimore Ravens, and now Jim Harbaugh with the Michigan Wolverines.
Mattison, the defensive coordinator under Brady Hoke looks to be the only carryover from the previous staff at least at this moment. He was also part of Lloyd Carr staff before heading to Notre Dame, then to Florida, and finally the Baltimore Ravens before coming back home to Ann Arbor.
Say what you want about Mattison’s defense while at Michigan, but it ranked in the top 20 the past three out of four seasons and he was also ranked the 2013 recruiter of the year by ESPN Recruiting Nation which covers recruiting for the network.

Jim Harbaugh commented to
MGoBlue: “I am very excited that Greg will remain here in Ann Arbor to continue coaching at this outstanding University,” said Harbaugh, the J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Head Football Coach. “He is a coach of the highest caliber who has dedicated his life to molding young men into outstanding people. He has strong bonds with our players and within this community. I have known Greg for a long time, and am so pleased that our relationship will continue here at Michigan.”
Mattison told MGoBlue: “Michigan is a special place to me, and I am excited to be a part of Jim’s staff,” said Mattison. “This University and this community mean a lot to me and my family. Having the opportunity to continue coaching a group I’ve grown so close to is very special. I look forward to continuing my work with these young men.”
Some might think having Mattison on the staff will be a split with the staff and the players since Mattison has been demoted while D.J. Durkin has been brought in to fill the defensive coordinators role, but Mattison and Durkin worked together at Notre Dame where Durkin was a graduate assistant while Mattison was the defensive line coach and co-defensive coordinator.
