Michigan Wolverine Football: Kevin Hogan — Is he Possible
Kevin Hogan will likely be one of the biggest recruits that teams will try and influence him to come to their school. He will be a 5th year player and hasn’t made a decision if he will come back to Stanford, try the NFL which is less than stellar talented quarterbacks eligible this year for the draft, or the most likely decision will be to take his services to another team for his final year.
On our message board last week we had a hypothetical poll on Braxton Miller if Jim Harbaugh would be interested in bringing him in and if Miller would want to move to Michigan for his final year. Of course, several things have to happen such as being healthy and can he make it into Michigan. There is a small group of 5th year quarterbacks that will be looking around for the best situation for themselves such as Braxton Miller, Kevin Hogan, Everett Golson, Jeff Driskel who was at Florida, but already received his release and is going to LA Tech. Cody Clements from UAB is going to South Alabama, David Watford at Virginia, and a few JUCO players that likely wouldn’t get into Michigan with their academics.

The best bet or best fit is Kevin Hogan. Have we ever seen a three year starter actually leave a team with a year left and go to another team before. Not saying it couldn’t happen, but in most cases the 5th year transfer thing usually happens to a guy that doesn’t see any playing time, not a starter, but seems like a lot of friction between himself and his coach in this article
Examining Stanford and the future of QB Kevin HoganThen we come to the real two issue? Does he want to come to Michigan and would Michigan allow him in, can he find a field for post-graduate to get into that he doesn’t have at Stanford? Those are the biggest issues more than anything. The thing we read about Hogan is he won’t graduate till June so that means he cannot step foot on campus at Michigan until after that point. Would Michigan have some type of class he can get into at that time unless he calls Harbaugh up in the next couple of weeks and starts getting the ball rolling? Would he really want to skip spring ball of his final year and wait till June to come to Ann Arbor where there isn’t any guarantee especially if Jim is working with three quarterback’s trying to prepare them for the season. Also that would mean he would have to win over the team in a hurry not being hear in the spring and show he is “over the top” better than the rest of the quarterback’s to gain trust and also be part of the team.
This to me would be a great option if the younger guys aren’t ready. He is familiar with the style of play or offense similar to Jim Harbaugh or as close to as possible, but would he actually want to give up a spring, come to Michigan where it is a unknown, and also miss the NFL this season if that is an option.
We was told this happened twice under Brady Hoke where he tried to bring in a 5th year player and it didn’t work out. Maybe Harbaugh gets admissions to loosen a little bit on these issues, but the main problem is trying to find a player that wants to come here, wants to find a post-grad that his school doesn’t have and that he can get into at Michigan. In most cases at Michigan it takes a long process to get into and of course the spots are very limited and a big selection process to go through so you have the time of it, getting everything around in a timely manner, and having everything to be accepted way ahead of time. Just not sure this is even an option in most cases unless Michigan changes their ways. The deadline is getting near as well at Michigan where other schools the deadline is a lot later such as Ohio State where it is during the summer.

Hogan would have to make a move towards Michigan by contacting them, not Michigan going after Hogan. So I believe somebody on Hogan’s behalf would have to make a move towards Jim Harbaugh or Michigan and say that he might be interested. Believe the move has to be from Hogan’s side and not from Michigan’s side reaching out to gauge interest. Since Harbaugh recruited him and got a commitment from him should be some type of ties there, but just curious if Jim would go down that path since he was at Stanford. Unless Hogan comes out immediately right now and says he is looking to transfer out his final year and tries to speed up the process and letting everybody know that he isn’t going to go to the NFL and looking to move his talents to another college to finish out his career.
Bottom line is if Coach Harbaugh wants Hogan and Hogan wants to come to Michigan, then Michigan needs to make it happen…PERIOD. Will it tick off some of the players that have been busting their butts in winter conditioning, spring ball, and summer work-outs? Yea probably will, but if Hogan can come in and win football games and shows that he is better for the team right now at this point is all that should matter. Winning football games no matter if your buddy is playing or not is a lot more fun than losing games and feeling you put all that hard work in for nothing.
In the end we aren’t sure the school would allow a 5th year as well with the timing issues and getting into a class, but if he wants to come to Michigan and cannot get into the school then nobody will especially since he is at Stanford.
