Michigan Wolverine Football: D.J. Durkin Waiting On Harbaugh
D.J. Durkin who will turn 37 years old next month is keeping his options open as he awaits the decision by Jim Harbaugh.
He use to work with Jim Harbaugh at Stanford where he was the defensive end/special teams coach. He has traveled around a bit where before his time at Stanford he was in the Midwest where he was a graduate assistant at Bowling Green under Urban Meyer, went to Notre Dame, and then back to Bowling Green for a few years. He later went to Florida in 2010 with Urban Meyer and then stayed on after Meyer had “medical issues” as they say.

During the Will Muschamp era he became the defensive coordinator for the Florida Gators and had some pretty good defensive units.
During the 2013 season even with a lot of key injuries Florida was still ranked #10 in total defense despite an offense that was one of the worst in all of college football. In fact, it was the offense that led to the Gators having a historically bad season.
The 2014 season the defense played pretty well even though the offense struggled once again. They had the 9th best defense in the country if you believe in defensive stats. They was 12th in the country for rush defense allowing 117 yards a game and they was 23rd in pass defense giving up 194 yards a game.

After Will Muschamp was fired, Durkin was promoted by the athletic director Jeremy Foley to take over the Florida program for the bowl game and being the interim-head coach. Durkin has been serving as Florida’s head coach and can’t go anywhere until after the new year, as he’s committed to leading the Gators against East Carolina in the Birmingham Bowl on Jan. 3 and likely using this time to fend off Texas A&M and saying he will talk about the job after that bowl game.
Texas A&M has been without a defensive coordinator since Mark Snyder was fired on Nov. 28, the day after A&M’s regular season ended with a home loss to LSU on Thanksgiving. This has hurt recruiting especially at home where they have lost out on a couple of key prospects that favored A&M at one time. Rubbing salt in the wound one of the recruits committed to arch-rival Texas.
So you would think a perfect match to re-join his former boss Jim Harbaugh at Michigan, right? Well I guess we will all have to wait and see including D.J. Durkin, Texas A&M, and Michigan.
