For months Reon Dawson has been committed to Illinois. He hails from Trotwood-Madison near Dayton, Ohio. There, he was the teammate of Michael McCray Jr., another Michigan commitment.

Michigan started seriously pursuing Reon as the semi-saga of Leon McQuay III was unraveling and the exit of Gareon Conley. On his recent visit, Reon Dawson obviously saw many things he liked about Michigan. He met and bonded well with many of his future teammates. By all accounts Reon is a high character person, and as such he should meld right into this bunch of 2013 recruits that have talent, but a very high level of scholarship and character coming out of high school.

Likely Michigan became interested for two reasons: (1) Conley and McQuay did not pan out as expected, and (2) Reon has the tangibles that the coaching staff is seeking in cornerbacks. Those qualities include height, long reach, and decent speed.

Reon is probably a system player and it will be up to the defensive staff to increase his raw skills into productive play at the collegiate level. He has upside, but is nowhere near in the readiness stage of say a Blake Countess. Two or three years from now that could change.

Overview:

Reon started for one of the top high school programs in Ohio, Trotwood Madison. He is an excellent athlete who fits what UM is looking for at the corner position. Specifically, Reon has very good length and long arms, with the frame to add good weight. Reon also could play safety, but we think he begins his career at corner. Reon is a solid student with a reported 3.3 GPA.

Strengths:

Excellent skill set with super quick feet, smooth loose hips, and above average speed. Film shows excellent recovery speed and ability to use height and long arms to his advantage. His hands are competent enough that there has been mention of his playing wide receiver.

Concerns/Needs Work:

Reon needs to add weight and strength. He also needs to work on reading routes and jumping them. Reon needs to improve breaks and the ability to change direction. His tackling and physical play also will need to improve.

Final Thoughts:

We welcome Reon Dawson to Michigan and hope he has a successful career on and off the football field as a student-athlete at the University of Michigan. Go Blue!

Red-shirt or play his Freshman Year?

GBMWolverine believes he will likely red-shirt his first year.

Reon Dawson reminds the GBMWolverine Staff of — Former Michigan Football Player — Jeremy LeSuer — who plays on the cornerback.

Bottom Line:

Michigan now has some athletic talent at cornerback; the question will be the developmental speed of each commit.
