Michigan Football: Coach’s Corner — Keith Heitzman — Defensive Line — Wolverine’s Spring Football — GBMWolverine Evaluations

GBMWolverine Football Spring Evaluations: Position-by-Position — Player Profile.

GBMWolverine readers: Here is a brief overview of Keith Heitzman and GBMWolverine’s analysis concerning his progress this spring in our opinion.

Note: We will not evaluate every player on the team and with this position group (Defensive Line) we will not evaluate #67 Nathan Brink. If you would like to chat about this player bring them up on the message board or send us an e-mail request.

Reminder: Also noted that we didn’t attend every practice and realize things happen during those fifteen practices, but our evaluations are based on what we seen first hand and in our opinion and not what we hear like just about every other site out there that relies on second, third hand information to make their evaluations of the players during the spring.

Losing from 2011 (Team #132) on scholarship: #39 Will Heininger, #53 Ryan Van Bergen, #68 Mike Martin, and #95 Chris Rock who has left the program.

Coming in for 2012 (Team #133) on scholarship: Willie Henry, Ondre Pipkins, Chris Wormley, Tom Strobel, Matt Godin, and Mario Ojemudia.

Commit for 2013 (Team #134) on scholarship: Henry Poggi, Maurice Hurst Jr., and Taco Charlton.

Keith Heitzman
Height: 6’3
Weight: 251
Number: 92
Position: Defensive Line (DE)
Year: Red-shirt Freshman
City/State: Hilliard, Ohio
High School: Hilliard Davidson
High School Coach: Brian White

Keith Heitzman hails from Hilliard, Ohio. He played on a strong Hilliard Davidson team that has won three state titles in the last decade ending the common belief that only Northeast Ohio or Cincinnati big school teams could win the Division 1 Ohio title. Keith played tight end and defensive end on a team that ran, ran, and ran some more on offense. Davidson is noted for great line technique. Although his position coming in was up in the air somewhat, most considered defensive end his best shot.

The GBMWolverine Staff considers it a real possibility that Keith could grow into a 3-tech defensive tackle under defensive coordinator Coach Greg Mattison, knowing what coach wants to do with the Michigan defense.

Keith does an okay job defending the run and works very hard. He is the type of player that in our opinion could benefit from very productive work in the weight room. With his size Keith could eventually get bigger and move inside to a defensive tackle position.

Keith did not provide any significant pass rush this spring from the practices we observed. In fairness, Keith was one of several defensive linemen that produced much of a pass rush. Most of the spring, the quarterbacks had it easy and were able to do whatever they wanted and had plenty of time to go through reads and even check down if needed.

Keith could actually be one of the players the incoming freshmen could push for playing time or a spot in the two-deep this season. This fall and next fall will see an infusion of talent that should provide for tough competition, and the marginal starters, or two-deep players, better compete, or else.
