Michigan Football: Coach’s Corner — Kaleb Ringer — Linebackers — Wolverine’s Spring Football — GBMWolverine Evaluations

GBMWolverine Football Spring Evaluations: Position-by-Position — Player Profile.

GBMWolverine readers: Here is a brief overview of Kaleb Ringer and GBMWolverine’s analysis concerning his progress this spring in our opinion.

Note: We will not evaluate every player on the team and with this position group (Linebackers) we will not evaluate #27 Al Mike Jones because we didn’t get a good read on him this spring. If you would like to chat about this player bring them up on the message board or send us an e-mail request.

Reminder: Also noted that we didn’t attend every practice and realize things happen during those fifteen practices, but our evaluations are based on what we seen first hand and in our opinion and not what we hear like just about every other site out there that relies on second, third hand information to make their evaluations of the players during the spring.

Losing from 2011 (Team #132) on scholarship: #34 Isaiah Bell who left the team, #42 J.B. Fitzgerald, #51 Marell Evans, and #58 Brandon Herron. #94 Jordan Paskorz has moved to tight end and #97 Brennen Beyer to defensive end.

Coming in for 2012 (Team #133) on scholarship: #35 Joe Bolden and #49 Kaleb Ringer (already on campus for spring football), Royce Jenkins-Stone and James Ross.

Commit for 2013 (Team #134) on scholarship: Michael McCray and Ben Gedeon.

Kaleb Ringer
Height: 6’1
Weight: 225
Number: 49
Position: Linebacker
Year: Freshman
City/State: Clayton, Ohio
High School: Northmont
High School Coach: Lance Schneider

Kaleb Ringer, from Ohio, is one of the few Wolverines that graduated early and got a head start on a college career. Recruiting reviews were mixed, from too small to some claiming him to be the best linebacker in Ohio. An injury his senior year slowed the recruiting and rating hype that accompanies BCS commits.

None of that matters now because he is at Michigan. One thing no one accused Kaleb of was failing to hit hard if the chance arrived. He is short but very muscular, and appeared to be heavier than the taller Joe Bolden.

Kaleb Ringer is one of those kids who does not do anything spectacular, but is always making tackles and around the ball.

He was always around the ball in scrimmages we viewed this spring. He is a pretty impressive looking athlete, with or without shoulder pads. Mr. T is not a bad descriptor for Kaleb.

It will be interesting to see how Kaleb will be used this year. We could see Kaleb being red-shirted since the veteran linebacker corps finally has some depth. But he could be used for special teams as well. His time might depend on how others play and stay healthy this year.

He has a huge advantage going into fall camp knowing what is expected from a linebacker at Michigan. Like all early entries, the positives include going through classes, learning first-hand what it takes to be a student-athlete, and learning time management between school, football, and college social life.

Early entry also allows a player access to the film room, a place where players, if knowledgeable about the process, can improve rapidly by identifying and correcting mistakes.

Incoming freshmen are always subjected to an initial look test in spring or fall practice. From the GBMWolverine perch, it can be stated with confidence that Kaleb passed the look test. Joe Bolden got the raves, but Kaleb Ringer received plenty of scrimmage time. The bet here is the coaches concluded they have a player with skills, desire to play, and a guy who will not back down from competition.
