Michigan Football: Coach’s Corner — Cam Gordon — Linebackers — Wolverine’s Spring Football — GBMWolverine Evaluations

GBMWolverine Football Spring Evaluations: Position-by-Position — Player Profile.

GBMWolverine readers: Here is a brief overview of Cam Gordon and GBMWolverine’s analysis concerning his progress this spring in our opinion.

Note: We will not evaluate every player on the team and with this position group (Linebackers) we will not evaluate #27 Al Mike Jones because we didn’t get a good read on him this spring. If you would like to chat about this player bring them up on the message board or send us an e-mail request.

Reminder: Also noted that we didn’t attend every practice and realize things happen during those fifteen practices, but our evaluations are based on what we seen first hand and in our opinion and not what we hear like just about every other site out there that relies on second, third hand information to make their evaluations of the players during the spring.

Losing from 2011 (Team #132) on scholarship: #34 Isaiah Bell who left the team, #42 J.B. Fitzgerald, #51 Marell Evans, and #58 Brandon Herron. #94 Jordan Paskorz has moved to tight end and #97 Brennen Beyer to defensive end.

Coming in for 2012 (Team #133) on scholarship: #35 Joe Bolden and #49 Kaleb Ringer (already on campus for spring football), Royce Jenkins-Stone and James Ross.

Commit for 2013 (Team #134) on scholarship: Michael McCray and Ben Gedeon.

Cam Gordon has always been an interesting topic for Michigan football discussion. He has been projected and played here and there in two very different schemes. This spring in practices, Cam demonstrated a lot of range and excellent movement skills.

Cam played mostly “Sam” linebacker this spring, but we also saw him sometimes at the “Will” linebacker as well.

Cam shows a physical side, but still, once again, size is a drawback still and something that he needs to work on at the training table and the weight room with Coach Wellman. He is one of the more athletically talented linebackers that Michigan had on the roster this spring, but just needs to put it all together. Note that we believe with more playing time and just being able to “play” Cam will become a nice contributor.

Last season Cam was very impressive on special teams after coming back from injury. Certainly that could be another way for him to see playing time this season. Based on the above discussion, we believe Cam will play a bigger roll on the defense this season, but match-ups with the opponent could dictate how much playing time he eventually receives. Other factors that could increase or decrease playing time is how well he starts the season and how the other linebackers are doing.

It does seem as if Cam is completely healed from last season’s injuries. His injury status not only stunted his development at the linebacker position but also led to others having the opportunity to show what they could do on the field. The above factors are why Cam saw limited time even when he came back late in the year.

As Coach Ricky Powers stated to us a couple of springs ago, Michigan is a doggy-dog world and the players behind the starters are just waiting for their opportunity to show what they can do on the field and impress the coaches enough to keep them there.
