Michigan Football: Coach’s Corner — Desmond Morgan — Linebackers — Wolverine’s Spring Football — GBMWolverine Evaluations

GBMWolverine Football Spring Evaluations: Position-by-Position — Player Profile.

GBMWolverine readers: Here is a brief overview of Desmond Morgan and GBMWolverine’s analysis concerning his progress this spring in our opinion.

Note: We will not evaluate every player on the team and with this position group (Linebackers) we will not evaluate #27 Al Mike Jones because we didn’t get a good read on him this spring. If you would like to chat about this player bring them up on the message board or send us an e-mail request.

Reminder: Also noted that we didn’t attend every practice and realize things happen during those fifteen practices, but our evaluations are based on what we seen first hand and in our opinion and not what we hear like just about every other site out there that relies on second, third hand information to make their evaluations of the players during the spring.

Losing from 2011 (Team #132) on scholarship: #34 Isaiah Bell who left the team, #42 J.B. Fitzgerald, #51 Marell Evans, and #58 Brandon Herron. #94 Jordan Paskorz has moved to tight end and #97 Brennen Beyer to defensive end.

Coming in for 2012 (Team #133) on scholarship: #35 Joe Bolden and #49 Kaleb Ringer (already on campus for spring football), Royce Jenkins-Stone and James Ross.

Commit for 2013 (Team #134) on scholarship: Michael McCray and Ben Gedeon.

We believe Desmond just might have the best instincts and football sense of all the linebackers from this spring’s practice roster.

Desmond is always around the ball and making plays and is just a solid football player. He is the type of player that the coaches just love to have on their side of the ball and seems to always come to practice ready to play.

Desmond is not a great athlete and was not recruited as one. He was recruited as a guy who fit the role of football player and does not accentuate the wow factor that has become so popular in sports. While not the big wow, Desmond is efficient, solid, dependable and pretty strong on the cerebral aspect of football.

Desmond could still use a bit more strength and size in the weight room, but will still be a solid contributor this season and all followers of Michigan football need to remember that he is only a sophomore. Just two years ago, not many people believed he would be such a big contributor his freshman year for the Sugar Bowl Champions.

Desmond is one of those players that we all love to see play the game, but he is also a player we really wish the coaches could have red-shirted. He could have really used the red-shirt to learn the defense, get better prepared in the weight room, and also get acclimated to college football.

Still, all in all, Desmond contributed well and will be in the mix at the linebacking position this year and beyond. He is the type of player that fits into a swarming defense scheme where many players are around the ball. If he is alone on the edge and it is a one on one situation with a premium athlete, like Denard Robinson or Braxton Miller, look out. But many defensive players fit that description, not just one true sophomore at Michigan.
