Michigan Football: Coach’s Corner — Devin Gardner — Quarterback — Wolverine’s Spring Football — GBMWolverine Evaluations
GBMWolverine Football Spring Evaluations: Position-by-Position — Player Profile.
GBMWolverine readers: Here is a brief overview of Devin Gardner and GBMWolverine’s analysis concerning his progress this spring in our opinion.
Note: We will not evaluate every player on the team and with this position group (Quarterbacks) we will not evaluate #4 Steve Wilson, #13 Alex Swieca, and #14 Jack Kennedy. If you would like to chat about these players bring them up on the message board or send us an e-mail request.
Reminder: Also noted that we didn’t attend every practice and realize things happen during those fifteen practices, but our evaluations are based on what we seen first hand and in our opinion and not what we hear like just about every other site out there that relies on second, third hand information to make their evaluations of the players during the spring.
Losing from 2011 (Team #132) on scholarship: Nobody.
Coming in for 2012 (Team #133) on scholarship: Nobody.
Commit for 2013 (Team #134) on scholarship: Shane Morris.

Devin Gardner is this year’s spring enigma, replacing last year’s enigma, fellow quarterback Denard Robinson.
Last year much buzz centered on Denard playing another position and Devin going to quarterback. This year the buzz is Devein playing more as a wideout and continuing as the primary backup quarterback. Last year’s scenario held no water, but this new one has a tortuous slow drip that will entice the Wolverine faithful until the season starts and the plan becomes obvious.
Devin has kept his speed and his frame has not filled out enough to slow him down. He remains an upper level athlete. His combination of speed and size is still noteworthy.
Fundamentally Devin does not throw a bad ball at all. But our staff continues to see Devin and Denard struggle some in the pocket. In practice he had several nice opportunities and his performance could be termed as ok, certainly nothing to threaten Denard as the starter. He tended to drift sideways and take off a little early, although some of these difficulties may (or may not) well be linked to minimal help at wideout.
Devin may not be Denard Robinson with his feet, but any defense must also account for his running ability on any play.
Perhaps playing time may be the best medicine for Devin, regardless of where.
