GBMWolverine: Coach’s Corner — Michigan Football — Top 20 Defensive Players Evaluations 20-16
The college football season never really ends for any dedicated aficionado that wishes every week was game week. We here also plead guilty and have prepared tidbits for consumption looking at the 2011 and offensive and defensive personnel.
First off is a look back and ahead for key defensive players of 2011, and below is a short description relating to those key players.
Michigan’s defense underwent a metamorphosis throughout the 2011 season. Here are the twenty principals in this transformation.
After seeing our ranking of players come to the message board and give your opinion and how you would rank the defensive players.
20. Cam Gordon:
No questioning his talent, he must stay healthy.
Cam could be factor at Sam or Will linebacker. If everything goes right he could be more than a factor.
Next season:
Cam needs to keep improving his size and strength. This spring could be a make or break year for Cam. He must show he belongs on the field and to find a spot for him.
19. J.B. Fitzgerald:
Fitz provided quality depth and good special team’s play.
The coaches and players appreciate his contributions and it was nice to see him have a special moment that will last a lifetime.
We wish him the best in whatever happens for him.
18. Will Campbell:
Big Will showed flashes of his skills. If he can finally be consistent with his pad level it would be a big plus.
Next season:
Will’s toughness and overall conditioning must improve. He must realize he is the best hope of filling some really big shoes. The success of the defensive line might just go through Will Campbell and if he can turn those “starts” into production on the football field.
He is one of the biggest keys to next season and how this defensive group handles replacing three defensive linemen. Time to step it up.
17. Brennen Beyer:
Another upcoming sophomore this season with lots of upside. He has good length and football sense. A player that not many expected to see as much playing time as he did. As always at a key position like linebacker he needs to improve on getting bigger, stronger, faster, along with learning the “little things” about the position.
Next season:
We like him at Sam Linebacker. He needs work on his movement skills and playing in space.
16. Jibreel Black:
Like some of the young guys discussed above, Jibreel is a bit of a tweener, but he does show good movement ability.
Next season:
We would like to see Jibreel add weight and strength and move inside to RVB’s 3 tech spot. He is going to be one of the players that will need to improve and be counted on for this defense not to fall dramatically from this past season on the defensive line.
Losing those three players is a huge concern, but it is now the younger players embrace the challenge and step up in the off-season to prepare themselves for the fall.
Next up will be our defensive player evaluation rankings 15-11.
