GBMWolverine Grade Card for Position Groups: Michigan vs. Ohio State
Note: GBMWolverine hereby tenders a small disclaimer, more of a reminder, to our readers. Some of our guys, maybe all actually, are pretty tough on game grades. We watch the game and later go back and further dissect the action, looking for details that a lot of fans miss or overlook when watching a game.
Again, here is our grading scale, simple but typical, intended to provide a general summary judgment based on specific instances collectively observed.
A = Great – everything went well, execution was very notable.
B = Good – success was achieved but nothing was exemplary.
C = Average/Okay – a normal day with ups and downs.
D = Poor/Need Help – a clear weakness, obvious problems.
F = Hope and Pray for a great recruiting class at that position.
Forget any rosy glasses, the guys played hard off the start and then a killer turnover stated the downward slide. Ohio State could have scored 50 or more if Tressel had chosen that path.
Offense:
350 yards of total offense but precious few yards in the second half again. UM moved the ball well between the 30’s in the 1st half. Again we cannot simply dismiss the three turnovers, only 7 points, and 1 only for 3 in red zone.
Grade: D+
Quarterback’s:
188 yards rushing, but less than 50% completions and two TO’s. They did not get a lot of help from the receivers.
Grade: C
Running Back’s:
Only 92 yards rushing, no receptions, and one huge turnover.
Grade: C-
Receivers:
Catch the D*MN ball.
Grade: D-
Offensive Line:
Played above average in the 1st quarter. Play fell off as the game wore on. 186 yards rushing and 4.4 per carry. Gave up 6 tackles for losses and 1 sack, this is not good enough to hang around with a good team.
Grade: C-
Defense:
Played an outstanding 1st quarter, but got little help from the offense as the game progressed. Wore down as game went on and big plays killed them.
Grade: C-
Defensive Line:
Played well in 1st quarter, but OSU’s superior size took over. The unit had 1 sack and 3.5 tackles for loss. Also lost contain on Pryor.
Grade: C-
Linebackers:
Mouton and Demens were solid against the run. The rest of the backers were basically non-factors. Coverage still needs plenty of work.
Grade: C-
Defensive Back’s:
Kovacs was huge against the run. Same story elsewhere, lost leverage, missed tackles, big cushions, etc.
Grade: C-
Special teams:
One nicely executed pooch punt doesn’t make up for an awful punt, KO return for 6, and average returns. Lack of confidence in FG kicking was killer throughout the season.
Grade: D
Some of these grades could have been easily lower than we put up.
To kick off the Holiday season, the FanSided network has partnered up with Site5 (our terrific hosting company) on a seasonal charity drive to raise money for a great cause — the Boys and Girls Club of America. What better cause than a non-profit organization dedicated to helping children, especially one that uses a heavy dosage of sports to reach those kids. This Holiday season, we here at the FanSided family are thankful for our growing network, our great hosting company (Site5) and, most of all, how fortunate we are. That’s why our family is giving back and asking you and your family to help us do so.
