GBMWolverine Grade Card for Position Groups: Michigan vs. Purdue

Note: GBMWolverine hereby tenders a small disclaimer, more of a reminder, to our readers. Some of our guys, maybe all actually, are pretty tough on game grades. We watch the game and later go back and further dissect the action, looking for details that a lot of fans miss or overlook when watching a game.

Again, here is our grading scale, simple but typical, intended to provide a general summary judgment based on specific instances collectively observed.

A = Great – everything went well, execution was very notable.
B = Good – success was achieved but nothing was exemplary.
C = Average/Okay – a normal day with ups and downs.
D = Poor/Need Help – a clear weakness, obvious problems.
F = Hope and Pray for a great recruiting class at that position.

Offense:

This unit put up just short of 400 yards in total offense and had a nice finishing drive that sealed the game. We cannot overlook the offense putting ball on the ground 6 times, losing 3 of the fumbles, and having two interceptions.

Grade: C-

Quarterbacks:

Two fumbles and another near miss by Forcier. Two interceptions, one was a pick 6 that made the game nervous time. The qb’s managed 250 yards of offense. But again one cannot overlook the TO’s.

Grade: C-

Running Back’s:

125 yards rushing and the RB’s ran with authority. Once again, ball security in a Big Ten game became a huge issue and held the grade Down.

Grade: C

Split End’s:

14 catches and a TD and a few real nice runs after the catches also. Blocking was not as good in our opinion as last week.

Grade: B

Offensive Line:

This group had its worst performance of the year in our opinion. The group gave up 4 sacks and 9 tackles for loss. The Purdue D Line controlled the LOS most the afternoon. Ryan Kerrigan can flat out play the game! He defines difference maker.

Grade: C-

Defense:

Tough call for an accurate grade; has the defense really improved this much in one week, or was Purdue just that bad? We will find out soon enough.

Grade: B-

Defensive Line:

This group had 1 sack and 3 tackles for loss. Still, this group gave up 160 yards rushing to a team that had problems completing any pass more than 5 yards.

Grade: B-

Linebacker’s:

The backers played one of their better games of the year. Ezeh might have played his best game in a UM uniform. Demens was his usual, steady self, especially against the run. Lbe’rs pursuit was clearly improved and guys were maintaining gaps better.

Grade: B-

Secondary:

This group had two interceptions and two fumble recoveries, one for 6 points. Again, as in previous weeks in Big Ten games, too many wide-open receivers and missed tackles in space.

Grade: B-

Special Teams:

Nothing very special again in our opinion. The kicking game missed badly on one extra point and FG and not catching a punt killed field position. There were two poorly executed pooch punts, and coverage issues. If the Purdue returner had any speed, Purdue probably breaks one. One super punt by Hagerup was a well-needed field position changer.

Grade: D+
