Coach’s Corner: GBMWolverine Grades for UConn Game

Here is our grading scale we have used in the past so people know where we stand.

A = Great
B = Good
C = Average / Okay
D = Poor / Need Help
F = Hope and Pray for a great recruiting class at that position.

Offense: No turnovers and 450 yards in total offense. One stat overlooked this week by many our is the 74% conversion on 3rd down and going four for four in red the zone. These stats are very good for a 1st game

Overall: B+

QB- DRob was 19-23 passing and had 190+ yards rushing. He committed no turnovers and was the biggest difference in the game.
Grade A

RBs- No turnovers and the pack ran hard most of the game. Still, this group averaged under 4 yards per carry. Note, this failure to get much more than two or three yards on basic running plays from the backs remains a big concern for the gang on GBMWolverine.
Grade B

SEs/Slots/TEs- Blocking in the 1st half was noticeably improved but leveled off some in 2nd half. SE’s in particular made some very big catches. We have read others complaining about the lack of slot involvement. In our opinion this was due to UConn’s defense strategy (name your poison deal). In 1/4s the safeties get help under from the Lb’ers, the CBs are on an island and the soft zones gave the SE’s a lot of room to exploit.

Grade B

O Line- The proud unit did a very solid job giving up no sacks and allowing UM to rush for close to 300 yards. The RB,s still averaged under 4 yards per carry and this needs to improve.

Grade B+

Defense: this unit gave up almost 350 yards in offense, had no sacks, and allowed 4.6 yards per rush. One good stat was 3rd down defensive stops and one huge turnover that changed the complexion of the game. The defense did bend but only gave up 10 points to a good offensive team. We also thought the overall tackling was average at best and needs to improve. After Michigan built a good lead, there appeared to be a let down and several tackles were whiffs.

Overall C+

D Line- The guys were solid against the run, especially up the middle. There were no sacks and the perimeter linemen gave up contain a few times.

Overall B-

Lb’er- We have been consistent in stating that until LB’er play improves the defense will be no better than average. And we maintain that stance. LB’er play was average, the group made some nice plays, and made some not so nice plays.

Overall grade- C

DB’s- Despite giving up a seam and a wheel, the DB’s were OK. This group to the surprise of no one is a major work in progress, but for this game they did not give up the big plays that killed UM last season. This is the other area that has to continue to improve if UM is going to be better than average.

Overall grade- C+

Special teams- A missed extra point, a missed FG, a muffed punt, and a couple of poor kickoffs. This is area that must improve or it will cost UM a game or two this season.

Grade- D+
