Michigan Football Tidbits: GBMW Offensive Roster, Depth Chart, Positions, and Comments.

GBMW 2010 Michigan Football Roster by Positions — Offense

Going into Spring Practices.

Quarterbacks:

1) Tate Forcier ………. Sophomore .. 2009 Recruiting Class.

2) Denard Robinson .. Sophomore .. 2009 Recruiting Class.

3) Nick Sheridan ……. RS Senior ….. Walk-on (Earned Schollie).

4) David Cone ………. RS Senior ….. 2006 Recruiting Class.

Incoming:

Devin Gardner (In Early) and Conelius Jones.

Position Losses:

Nobody

Quarterback Comments:

How is Tate’s shoulder and how will his velocity on the ball be this spring? It certainly is great to get Devin in early to learn and go through the system. We will soon be able to observe how comfortable Denard is in the system. Regarding Conelius, it will be interesting to see what happens to him and if the UM staff keeps him at quarterback, or instead see if his athletic skills would be better used at another position. He is probably a candidate to red-shirt, especially if he stays at quarterback.

Running Backs:

Tailbacks:

1) Michael Shaw …………… Junior …………… 2008 Recruiting Class.

2) Michael Cox …………….. RS Sophomore .. 2008 Recruiting Class.

3) Fitzgerald Toussaint ….. RS Freshman ….. 2009 Recruiting Class.

4) Teric Jones ……………… Sophomore ……. 2009 Recruiting Class.

— Vincent Smith (Injury) … Sophomore ……. 2009 Recruiting Class.

Incoming:

Stephen Hopkins (In Early) and Austin White (In Early).

Position Losses:

Brandon Minor and Carlos Brown.

Fullback:

1) Mark Moundros .. RS Senior .. Walk-on (Earned Schollie).

Incoming:

Nobody.

Position losses:

Kevin Grady.

Running Back Comments:

It is time to see if Michael Shaw can stay healthy. We sound like a broken record by continuing to make the same statement last year with the running backs as a group, but for two years this has seemed to come true. With Vincent Smith out for the spring, Fitzgerald Toussaint will have an opportunity to run with the first team and it will be a key area of focus to see how he does. Can he stay healthy? Also, Smith’s injury will give the two incoming freshman (White and Hopkins) a chance to get more reps in the spring. Will the staff consider moving or at least trying out Mike Cox as the fullback to replace Kevin Grady as a running passing receiving threat? This could provide some depth at fullback. Or will the staff use Kevin at running back similar to how Brandon Minor was used last season? Rumors of Teric Jones trying running back for the spring. Can he find a spot or will he be just like James Rogers who keeps jumping around and not be able to find a position.

Split End:

1) Junior Hemingway .. RS Junior ……. 2007 Recruiting Class.

2) Darryl Stonum …… Junior ………… 2008 Recruiting Class.

3) Je’Ron Stokes ……. Sophomore ….. 2009 Recruiting Class.

4) Cameron Gordon … RS Freshman .. 2009 Recruiting Class.

Incoming:

Ricardo Miller (In Early), Jeremy Jackson (In Early), Jerald Robinson (In Early), and D.J. Williamson.

Position losses:

Greg Mathews and LaTerryal Savoy .

Split End Comments:

Will Stonum provide, or get a chance to provide, the needed vertical threat that is so badly needed for this offense to be successful by using the entire field and make safeties back up and respect the deep ball? How will the freshman do this spring and can they provide good quality depth this year? It is time for Hemingway to stay healthy and provide the leadership needed out of this group. In the spring we will see how Stokes does when he is just concentrating on the split end position and not the slot receiver position. Is this spring make or break for Cam Gordon? Rumors are that coaches want to try him out at linebacker, but such a decision might depend on how the new incoming split ends impress, along with a judgment concerning if Cam can play wideout.

Slot Receiver:

1) Martavious Odoms … Junior …………… 2008 Recruiting Class.

2) Roy Roundtree …….. RS Sophomore … 2008 Recruiting Class.

3) Kelvin Grady ……….. RS Junior ………. 2007 Recruiting Class (BB).

4) Jeremy Gallon ……… RS Freshman …. 2009 Recruiting Class.

5) Terrence Robinson .. RS Sophomore .. 2008 Recruiting Class.

Incoming:

Drew Dileo.

Position losses:

Nobody.

Slot Receiver Comments:

We have all heard about Gallon, but can he provide the needed explosiveness and elusiveness from the inside receiver that this offense indeed depends on? Michigan does not really have “that guy” or we have not see it yet. It certainly would be nice to see a little bit of Denard Robinson at this position as well. Roundtree is not the typical slot receiver that Coach Rod prefers for this position. But when others failed, Roundtree proved he could do two things; get open and catch the ball (needed skills many others could not accomplish). Regarding Terrence: this might be his last real chance to prove himself and work into the rotation. If not, he might be a special teams only player. Odoms: can he stay healthy enough the whole season and can he hold off the others?

Tight End:

1) Kevin Koger …… Junior ………….. 2008 Recruiting Class.

2) Martell Webb ….. Senior …………… 2007 Recruiting Class.

3) Brandon Moore .. RS Sophomore .. 2008 Recruiting Class.

Incoming:

Nobody.

Position losses:

Nobody.

Tight End Comments:

The tight ends that Michigan currently has on the roster are athletic and talented, but later on last season this group faltered. Can this group regain the confidence of the coaching staff to get them the ball? This group could be a huge factor in offensive production by allowing the spreading around of the ball. This group could be used as huge weapons going up against smaller linebackers, or undersized safeties. Their biggest problem might be, just like the split ends, getting the ball. Will the staff use the tight end formation more if the tight ends show they will catch the ball more consistently? It is added pressure when a player knows the ball may be coming their way only once a game and the results and psyche go straight downhill on a drop.

Offensive Live:

1) Perry Dorrestein …….. RS Senior ………. 2006 Recruiting Class.

1) Stephen Schilling …… RS Senior ………. 2006 Recruiting Class.

1) Rocko Khoury ……….. RS Sophomore … 2008 Recruiting Class.

1) Patrick Omameh ……. RS Sophomore … 2008 Recruiting Class.

1) Mark Huyge ………….. RS Junior ………. 2007 Recruiting Class.

2) Taylor Lewan ………… RS Freshman …. 2009 Recruiting Class.

2) Elliott Mealer ………… RS Sophomore .. 2008 Recruiting Class.

2) John Ferrara …………. RS Senior ………. 2006 Recruiting Class.

2) Ricky Barnum ……….. RS Sophomore .. 2008 Recruiting Class.

2) Michael Schofield …… RS Freshman …. 2009 Recruiting Class.

3) Quinton Washington .. RS Freshman …. 2009 Recruiting Class.

3) Bryant Nowicki ………. RS Senior ………. (Walk-on).

— David Molk (injured) … RS Junior ……… 2007 Recruiting Class.

Incoming:

Christian Pace (In Early).

Position losses:

Mark Ortmann, David Moosman, and Tim McAvoy.

Offensive Line Comments:

The biggest question mark is, in our opinion, who plays left tackle? Will the staff go with the experienced player or the more athletic player? Does Omameh move back outside, does one of the red-shirts step up, or do we have to move one of the offensive guards, like Barnum, to tackle? The importance of securing the left flank cannot be overstated. This failure last year enabled opposing defenses to gain leverage on the UM quarterbacks and run them straight into a pack of tacklers. Can Khoury gain enough practice time to impress the coaches thereby getting a fair shot at the center position? Will the younger players be able to step-up and provide depth?

Going into spring ball the above #1’s are a possible starting line-up. Remember, though, Coach Rod is big on a depth chart changing from day to day. It is almost a certainty we will see a lot of different combinations, making a projection of the starting five difficult especially with how they like to rotate players.
