GBMW: Delaware State Preview

When was the last time that Michigan played a very good offensive and defensive front team and controlled the line of scrimmage? That’s right, we couldn’t tell you either.

Last week actually gave us hope that this team is on its way to becoming a much more physical, punch you in the mouth, type of team that has been missing in action for a while now.

Michigan, at least to GBMW, was much more impressive in the loss at Iowa than in the win against Indiana . Granted, the quarterback play last week was not very good, but this is the second week in a row where the defensive front had a solid day in controlling the other team’s ground game.

Delaware State comes at the perfect time. Michigan needs some confidence and a break to get healed up for the stretch run of the season. This may be the worst team that has stepped foot in the “Big House” in many years.

Not only are they an FCS team but a very bad one at that. This is no Appalachian State team, this is for sure. Delaware State comes into Michigan Stadium with a 1-3 overall record, with a 1-2 record in their MEAC conference and the only win coming against Hampton.

Look for Michigan to gain over 500 yards on offense and not allow a touchdown all day. Look for some vanilla looks on offense and defense this week in preparation for Penn State.

If we were Coach Rod (we are not saying we are) we would be putting in some of the game plan for Penn State this week. We hope we see more of Mike Shaw and Vincent Smith this week on offense, enhancing the chances of getting Carlos Brown and Brandon Minor healthy for the stretch run of the Big Ten and possible the biggest game of the year, next week against Penn State.

This is one of those weeks where Michigan is playing against itself more than they are the opponent. How this team reacts could be the biggest question of the day.

Michigan should be able to move the ball at will this week and everything that they try will probably work. This would be a great time to get a lot of young guys that have not played very much an opportunity to play in front of family and friends and not risk injury to currently healthy key players or provide respite for those that are ailing from injuries.

On defense, UM fans should see the team focus on a few things to prepare for Penn State and, like the offense, see some rotation, not only on the defensive line, but at linebackers and defensive backs as well.

This game should not even be close, and by all accounts, if it is, people need to get a little worried. This is a bye week without the bye and a nice tune-up game to prepare for Penn State while getting some kids experience, especially those that have either not played much or have lost their red shirt. As they say, might as well play them now.
