Michigan Football Tidbits: Best Offensive Players
Michigan Football Tidbits: Best Offensive Players
Offense: MaizeMan – his are easy – same as most improved
1) Ortmann: Not a sexy pick, but sometimes we forget what Ortmann has been through since coming to Michigan. He was recruited from Texas as a tight end, and immediately upon arrival at Michigan was moved to offensive tackle and asked by former S&C coach to bulk up as quickly as possible. The results were Ortmann bulked up, but lost a great deal of his quickness.
Then when he is about to win a starting position he was injured (chest injury) and for an extended period could not lift weights. He lost most of his strength. Then we change coaches and while we like to talk about all the different defensive coaches, the change in schemes on offense was a new world for the offensive line. A year ago he started, but had major problems in the offense. Ortmann however continued to work and was praised by Barwis for his leadership and has really become a very good left tackle in this offense.
2) C. Brown: Two reasons one) is he is healthy, and second) he wants to play. For three years many have questioned whether if healthy he really had the desire to play. This year we see a completely different kid.
3) Huyge: This should have been an obvious choice, but could have mentioned almost anyone on the offensive line.
Offense: CoachBt
1) Brandon Minor: Noticeably bigger and faster than last year. He is capable of carrying a big chunk of the offense if healthy.
2) Steve Schilling: Leader and best offensive linemen. Moving him to offensive guard takes a competent offensive tackle and turns him into a great offensive guard.
3) C Brown: Not just fast any more, but now has the quickness and elusiveness. He is capable of breaking a big one from anywhere on the field.
Offense: ErocWolverine
1) B. Minor: Best running back on the team and has taken a leadership role this year. If healthy he will be the number one back, taking a lot of snaps and carries this year. He was my MVP of the spring for the offense.
2) C. Brown: You can tell he is healthy and wants to play football again. Hopefully all the injuries are behind him and he will make a big impact this year. We were told that he tested to be the fastest on the team this spring. If he stays healthy along with Minor they will make a great one two punch at running back, especially with their different styles of running.
3a) Schilling: Well I have to put Schilling in here as well because he is the glue of this offensive line and along with Ortaman forms a solid left side of the O-line.
3b) Tate Forcier: No to put pressure on the kid, but he really impressed me this spring. Maybe because going into spring ball I was looking for the same thing we saw last year. But that wasn’t the case–Tate performed well.
Yes, he had some very bad plays, but also had some very good plays. I just think how bad this spring could have been if he did not come in early. Let us hope he learns the complete offense and feels comfortable in it as well. He needs to do that not just for his sake, but so the team can feel confident in him as well. Like he said after spring “all I do is get them the ball” … well if he can play that way and make it look as easy as it sounds, this offense could be deadly, especially with the athletes and options they have.
