Michigan Football: Tidbits from Winter Work-outs

Well it looks like several kids are complaining about how the workouts are going so far and one of the biggest complainers is Carson Butler because of all the running. They run 40-yard dashes timed compared to last year where they only ran 20-yard dashes untimed. Each week they need to improve and get faster. So no loafing allowed anymore and every other week they are having positional coaches meetings with the players to see how they are progressing through the workouts along with how the kids are feeling about the new workouts. Which is a great thing so they might be able to get a hold of a kid, work things out before things get out of hand, and then a kid becomes a distraction?

Not trying to say that Butler will leave right now, but he is not very happy either at this stage of the strength and conditioning workouts. It seems a lot of the complaining from several people that did not hit the strength and conditioning very hard in the past and forced to now or the kids that are not sure what their plans are after spring. Just somebody to keep an eye on at this point in time.

Seems like several people really like the new workouts such as Justin Boren, Vince Helmuth, Troy Woolfolk, Kevin Grady and a lot more guys.

Right now, we are looking at only nine offensive linemen so the depth chart is going to be looking thin for spring football. Probably only seven people are really competing for the five spots available with Moosman and Huyge just looking to fill depth spots.

Just to keep track Chris McClaurin and Antonio Bass both are going on medical so they will not be around to go with Ryan Mallett who transferred to Arkansas. Then we had Mario Manningham and Adrian Arrington leaving for the NFL early. People that are not coming back that still have eligibility left are Alex Mitchell, Grant DeBenedictis, Jason Kates, Brett Gallimore and Jeremy Ciulla. That is ten kids already not coming back and there are several other kids going through spring ball that might not be on the fall roster.

Be interesting to see what people like Doug Dutch, Carson Butler and Charles Stewart might do after spring ball. We think guys like Dutch and Stewart might be a deal where if they see playing time they might stick around, but if they don’t see playing time they might not want to go through all the off season summer conditioning.

Coaching recruiting area include Tony Dews covering Detroit along with California. Fred Jackson covering the south along with the eastern seaboard with Virginia and South Carolina. Tony Gibson hitting Ohio and Pennsylvania, Bruce Tall covering Ohio, Jay Hopson in the south along with Dallas, Greg Frey in Florida and New Jersey, Rod Smith in Florida, Calvin Magee in Florida, Scot Shafer in Detroit Catholic leagues and Chicago area.
