For the third time since 2024, Michigan is searching for a new basketball coach. Rumors were flying about Dusty May going to the NBA, but no one actually believed he would leave, especially this late in the cycle. Losing another championship coach to the pros is devastating, and now Warde Manuel has to find his replacement on short notice. The timing couldn't be any worse.
In this day and age, players are almost guaranteed to join the transfer portal, and Michigan is not exempt from superstars choosing to do so. Mike Boynton has been hired on an interim basis and here are two players he needs to worry about leaving the most.
2 players that could enter the transfer portal
Moustapha Thiam
You have to believe that the whole reason Thiam transferred to Michigan is because of May. He wanted to be the next 7-footer to shine in his system. Now that the opportunity is gone, Thiam is left waiting and pondering his future. Big money will be thrown his way to rethink his reasons for staying at Michigan.
Brandon McCoy
College programs will pounce on McCoy if he decides to throw his name in the ring. He is on pace to start, but with the coaching change it wouldn't be a shock if he opted out of his scholarship. Players of his caliber usually do that in today's unloyal environment. Every player on the roster becomes the no. 1 priority once the new coach is named.
In the meantime, putting the interim tag on Mike Boynton Jr. was the right move, but similar to choosing Sherrone Moore to replace Jim Harbaugh. Warde Manuel has many options to choose from, but what big-time coach will want to exit their present status to come to Michigan in June or July? To Michigan's credit, John Beilein and Dusty May have built this job into one of the most desirable jobs in all of basketball, and that should have coaches knocking on their doorstep.
