Michigan football seemed like a favorite for three-star offensive tackle Caleb Tiernan but he ended up choosing Northwestern. Here’s where U-M goes after.

In the recruiting battle of three-star offensive tackle Caleb Tiernan, Michigan football seemed to be in a strong position until just days ago.

Just this week, Michigan football held all of Tiernan’s crystal ball projections. But suddenly, at the last minute, things started to change. Those predictions started going to Northwestern and this afternoon, Tiernan made it official, announcing his commitment on Twitter.

While it might be easy to say that oh, Tiernan was just a three-star and it’s not a big deal, he was the No. 11 player in the state of Michigan according to the 247 sports composite rankings and also a top-400 prospect nationally. He was also 6-foot-7 and had a lot of upside.

Tiernan was the kind of player who could have learned under offensive line coach Ed Warriner and eventually developed into a starter. At least that was the idea and he should fit in really well with Northwestern.

The loss of Tiernan know turns the focus to four-star offensive tackle David Davidkov, who is the No. 2 player in the state of Illinois according to the 247 composite rankings and a top-200 prospect. He’s a legit four-star player and at 6-foot-6, 295 pounds, he looks like a prototypical offensive tackle.

The good news with him is that Michigan football currently holds all of his crystal ball projections, but Iowa is still looking to get into the mix and as we saw with Tiernan, this kind of thing can change quickly. Ohio State is also interested and has offered as well as Wisconsin.

Tristan Bounds is another player that Michigan is target at offensive tackle and the three-star from Connecticut is ranked well below some of the other tackle targets at 657th overall and 58th at the position. Michigan football has taken more of an interest lately because things haven’t gone as well as Garrett Dellinger, a kid from Clarkston that has all of his crystal ball pointing to LSU.

Nolan Rucci is another name Michigan football is mentioned with, but again, the Wolverines seem to be trailing. Penn State is the leader, according to crystal balls on 247 sports and Clemson isn’t far behind.

Essentially, that means that Davidkov is the key target at tackle. Remember, the Wolverines already have a commitment from four-star Giovanni El-Hadi. He’s a top-100 offensive tackle and if you add Davidkov and possibly a guy like Bounds, that’s not a bad haul.
