Michigan football hosted a number of key 2021 targets over the weekend and already, the Wolverines are getting crystal ball projections from experts.

If you follow Michigan football recruiting closely it won’t come as a surprise that last weekend was an important one for the Wolverines as a number of important targets were in Ann Arbor.

It’s part of a full shift towards the 2021 class that’s been underway. One player that already belongs to that class is five-star quarterback J.J. McCarthy. People keep talking about how Michigan needs to find an elite quarterback and McCarthy, the No. 2 QB in 2021, could be it.

McCarthy has been an active recruiter for the Wolverines and it seems like his efforts, along with that of the coaching staff is starting to pay off in a big way with four-star running back Donovan Edwards, an in-state running back that’s No 2 in the 247 composite rankings.

Michigan football landed a high-end running back in 2019 with Zach Charbonnet and Edwards would be very similar. He’s a top-50 prospect and just a couple days after his last visit, the Wolverines already got another crystal ball predicting him to Michigan.

Experts don’t always get these predictions right and with Ohio State after the 5-foot-11, 190-pound back, nothing is guaranteed, but Michigan football has seven of his eight crystal balls right now, so things seem to be headed in the right direction. Now, it’s time to close the deal.

Edwards would give Michigan yet another dynamic runner to follow in the path of Charbonnet, Hassan Haskins and Blake Corum, who will be a freshman next season.

While landing Edwards is a top priority in 2021, not every recruit is going to be a four-star or a top-50 kid. But one three-star that also is being projected to Michigan, this time by Steve Lorenz of The Michigan Insider, is corner Kalen King of Cass Tech.

Michigan football hosted King over the weekend and the 5-foot-11 corner is someone that Lorenz reports the staff views highly ($). King is just a three-star, but he could be a guy that moves up and even so, he’s ranked 25th among corners and 10th in the state.

He has received a ton of interest from the Big Ten with offers from Penn State, Michigan State, Wisconsin others such as Arkansas and West Virginia. Rankings wise, he may not be a superstar, yet he has the look of a solid contributor.

It also seems like there is a good chance he winds up with the Wolverines.
