For years, the Michigan football team has been searching for a dynamic quarterback. Check that, a transcendent quarterback. It seems the Wolverines will have that soon, the question is, in the end, who will it be?

Finding a star quarterback is often one of the most difficult things for a college football program to do. Yet, in a short time as the head coach of Michigan football, Jim Harbaugh has not only managed to add one star to the depth chart, he’s added a few.

In Harbaugh’s first year on the job, he landed Jake Rudock and John O’Korn as transfers, as well as Zack Gentry, the No.19 quarterback in the nation and a four-star. He also signed with Michigan football after being committed to Texas.

That class right there may provide the starting quarterback for two seasons, provided O’Korn wins the job this fall. Yet, it pales in comparison to what Harbaugh achieved in 2016 and 2017.

In 2016, Harbaugh landed Brandon Peters, a kid he compared to Andrew Luck. Peters was also the third-ranked quarterback coming out of High School that season.

Peters, who is currently enrolled at Michigan and took part in spring practice, was supposed to be the heir apparent. That was until Dylan McCaffery came along.

If you’re wondering if McCaffery is related to Stanford superstar Christian McCaffery, the answer is yes; yes he is.

Dylan McCaffery also just happens to be the top-rated quarterback in the 2017, giving Michigan football, potentially, two of the most talented signal-callers in the country.

Peters is very good, McCaffery may be even better. When you watch the way he throws the football, you can imagine why Harbaugh wanted him so bad. He is full of arm talent and his athleticism is off the charts.

In short, McCaffery is probably the perfect college quarterback. He can play a pocket-style passing game, but will still have the ability to make things happen with his feet.

Yet, Peters is also no slouch and shares many of the same attributes. And he’s got the head start on McCaffery. And outside of O’Korn and Wilton Speight, Peters is probably next in line to see snaps at quarterback, especially after Gentry moved to tight end.

No matter who it ends up being, the truth is that at some point in the next year or two, either Peters or McCaffery are going to take the reigns of this program and hopefully lead it back to the promise land for the first time in two decades.

The most interesting thing might just end up being the battle to see who gets that opportunity.
