Devery Hamilton, a 2016 Michigan Wolverine commit, has the potential to become the type of offensive lineman that Jim Harbaugh loves to develop.

Devery Hamilton is a huge high school player from Baltimore Gilman High School. Devery fits the recent Harbaugh pattern: he can play both ways; he is a decent athlete and has played multiple sports.

Hamilton, a 4-star prospect and the No. 23 offensive tackle in the nation according to 247 Sports composite rankings, is listed at 6’ 6” and 290 pounds. His build is athletic, versus a body that will need to be completely reshaped. Sources cite his good arm span. So, here is a lineman more in the mold of a tackle. Devery has plenty of work to do to become an accomplished Division One tackle, but the size and potential are clearly present.

The Baltimore, Md., Gilmore HS, product’s offer sheet consisted of some heavyweight programs. The primary competition is reported as being Stanford and Maryland.

It is somewhat difficult to judge his pure talent range as he dominates the smaller opposition. Regardless, tackles being what they are, almost any program is delighted to gain a commitment from a behemoth who will grow as he progresses through college.

The offensive line haul is starting to look pretty good, both talent and size wise. As with almost all offensive linemen, time will tell how good the four current commits become.

Note: Stars do matter, but are not absolute in predicting success within a football program. So, with that in mind the GBMWolverine Staff has cleverly come up with a new system of ranking. We are using footballs instead of stars, how can one argue against a system that clever? Below are the interpretations of football power predicted way too boldly long before it matters. In other words, we will give informed opinion with the crystal ball and let the players determine what will happen through years of hard work.

Criteria: Raw talent, athleticism, position of need, intangibles.

GBMWolverine Rankings:

10 footballs: Instant impact player.
9 footballs: Three or four-year starter at a high level.
8 footballs: A starter with all league potential.
7 footballs: A meaningful starter at some time during a career.
6 footballs: A spot starter or special teams player.
5 footballs: Not in the two deep after a two years.
4 footballs: Never made it.
1-3 footballs: See the above.

We have Hamilton at 7 1/2 to 8 footballs.

Side Note:

Remember just as we did during the season with grading positions or groups we are very tough graders and expect a lot out of those positions or players so this is no different here.

  • Overview:

Devery Hamilton is a two-way linemen for Baltimore Gilman. He played offensive left tackle, defensive end and defensive tackle as a junior. Devery could play on either side of the ball, but we think offensive tackle is his best fit. Devery is a good enough athlete to play for the Gilman basketball team. No GPA was listed, however, Hamilton has talked about the importance of academics in making his college choice. Take into consideration that Stanford offered, as did Northwestern, Wake Forest, and Georgia Tech.

    Strengths:

Devery definitely passes the sight test. He is long and lanky, with the arm length needed to play tackle. Devery is a very good athlete for a player his size, moves his feet well, and also shows solid lateral quickness. He is athletic enough to block the 2nd level and film denotes this as a strength in down blocking. On defense Devery shows toughness and an aggressive style of play. He also shows hustle and plays until the whistle.

    Concerns/Needs Work:

As with most high school linemen, Devery definitely needs some time in the weight room to add size and strength. Also, he needs to bend his knees more and play with better leverage and body position. His pass pro posture needs a big upgrade and he will need to be more consistent with his hands and punches.

Red-shirt or play his Freshman Year?

GBMWolverine believes he will likely red-shirt his first year.

Devery Hamilton reminds the GBMWolverine Staff of — Former Michigan Football Player — Maurice Williams — who played on the Offensive Line.
